Taking Care of Your Horses Hooves

Your horses hooves are extremely important in the way of caring for your horses health. It is best to have them trimmed and shod every six to eight weeks. Usually, the ferrier puts you on his schedule for six weeks out unless something comes up to put it off a week or so. You must also pick your horses feet before and after riding him. Pick up his foot and working from heel to toe, take your hoof pick and clean out the dirt and debris from the hoof and shoe. Dirt being left in the hoof can cause fungal infections and other problem with the legs. And stones left in the hoof can hurt the horses foot. Your stable floor should be kept as dry as possible allowing for proper drainage so that the animal won’t be standing in a wet stall. or paddock. Standing in a wet environment for too long will cause the hoof to dry and crack.

The Hoof wall is also important to take care of as it controls the moisture balance. Wash off the foot carefully with a wet hoof brush. In a dry climate this will keep in the hoof moisture. In damp wet climates use hoof oil on the underside of the foot to stop the hooves from becoming weak. It also gives the foot a nice outer appearance. You can ask your ferrier to advise you on what to apply to keep the hoof in good condition.

Feed is important to a horses foot health. Low protein or an unbalanced diet will cause unhealthy horses and hooves. Supplements may be necessary to add to your horses diet. Some horses, when put on a diet with levels of biotin and methionine, will show improved hoof health. Biotin is a vitamin that promotes the health and growth of keratin and other connective tissue. Methionine is an emino acid that is essential for the growth of healthy hooves. Products high in zinc and copper also promote also helps the hoof remain healthy.

It is also important to remember that unless you are riding your horse frequently or in rough terrain, there is no need to have shoes put on. Many horse do just fine with no shoes at all, and in many cases horses that have had shoes on for long periods of time can take a break from them for a month just to rest the hoof.

A few other supplements for hoof care are Manganese, Selenium, Iodine, Lysine, Threonine and B vitamins. The hoof wall is like a humans fingernail, and it grows very slowly at a rate of about three-eights to one-half inch per month. It can take up to a year for healthy tissue to reach the bottom of the hoof, therefore any supplements may take weeks or months to show any results on the hoof.

Basic Horse Knowlege

Because we always see pictures of horses just grazing out in the field we assume horses live there alone with little or no attention from humans. Because of their size and strength, horses can be sometimes misunderstood by a lot of people who know nothing about them. Unless you are around horses on a regular basis, you will not know how they act or the safety issues involved with being close to a horse. Lets take a look a some basic horse care.

Communication is very important with any animal. Since they cannot learn how to understand human behavior, we as owners of horses must learn the horses world instead. Horses, like many animals, have a strong since of self-preservation. They are herd animals, so their instinct is to run from danger and stay within their heard for protection. With some good training and an experienced rider, a grown horse can learn to follow directions rather than following their instincts in many cases. Trust is the key for this to happen and it happens over time. Spend time with your horse and always react appropriately and consistently to their behavior.

Movements, body position and calls are all forms of communication with horses. Just sit and observe your horse for long periods of time and you will begin to see the horses language to other horses and to humans. The ears of a horse always point in the direction that he is paying attention to. If you are riding him, you want one ear point at you. If his ears are pinned back it means he is afraid or angry. Ears that move front and back continuously indicates uncertainty. Don’t misunderstand ears that are pointing back to listen with the “flat” back ears with means anger.

The tail is also a way to read your horse. A high tail means excitement in a horse while a tail that is flattened and between their legs means fear. A tail that is lashing about is a sign of irritation and annoyance. A sort of “kinked” tail is often a sign that your horse is about to buck, especially if he bows his back up at the same time.

Facial expressions are another way to read what a horse is thinking. A wrinkled nose can mean disgust and annoyance. When a horse bares his teeth with an open mouth, it means he’s about to bite. A long nose and tight mouth show anxiety and fear as when they are being taught something. When he figures out what he is trying to be taught, then his mouth will relax and he’ll began to chew. A long nose with a slightly open mouth shows that the horse wants to be groomed and also to groom in return too.

These are just a few ways that you can begin to communicate with your horse. Because people are verbal, we often don’t want to understand other forms of communication, but if we are to have a horse or any animal and take good care of them, then we need to at least try to learn ways to improve how we react with each other. Trust and positive interaction is the key.

How to Get Listed in Google, Yahoo and MSN

How to get your website listed on Google

There are numerous ways to get your website listed on the great Google search engine. But…and there is always a big but, before continuing I’ve got to make one thing perfectly clear.

Do NOT pay any submission service to get your website or blog listed. Unless you have deep pockets and thousands of big bucks to throw away…then go ahead and waste your money. I guarantee that paying any submission service to get your website listed on google is a complete waste of time and money!

Free submission services are also a waste of time…don’t do it. These submission services make their money from unsuspecting new Internet marketing folks who have no idea what they are doing.

Do it yourself and I will show you how right here…right now! And the price for this information is FREE!

What is your website or about?

Ok…here is how you get your website listed without all the hassles.

1. Write an article about whatever your website or blog is about. Then submit it to the article directories. Just make sure that you insert your website URL or Blog URL in the bio page of each directory. Be sure to add some of the same keywords that you use on your website.

2. The absolute best article directories are ezinearticles.com and goarticles.com Remember to add you bio in the resource box provided by all the article directories.

The resource or bio box is a short paragraph about the author that publishers usually want with each article submissions. It’s included at the bottom of the published article. You should have your name, and web site address. You should also add your tagline and email address.

3. Remember I write articles about what I know. Do not copy someone Else’s work…it’s ok to read an article to get new ideas and write something similar that will interest your readers. Never copy anything word for word!

Ok…now if you don’t believe me here is proof on how this works. Try Googling “Southwestern trees” you will see my gardening website listed on the first page and top billing. I actually have hundreds of webpages that are listed at the top of Google SERP’s. I did this by writing articles about southwestern trees and submitting them to the articles directories.

Get your new website listed in weeks.

Ok…I know many of you are saying…what about a brand new website?

Before we continue I want to set the record straight about “Google’s Sandbox Theory”. IT is just that “theory”. In my opinion there is no sandbox unless the google gods have cats as pets!

Lets continue… try googling “How to start a website”. You will see my artricle that I submitted to ezinearticles.com around the first week of April. This is an ezinearticles.com article. If you click on the link it will take you to my article and my bio page that contains my website URL.

Go ahead do it right now I’ll wait…

This will generate some traffic, and will also build links to your site which in turn helps your website page rank. My IM website is only about 6 months old and it already has a page rank of 2. I do almost zero promotion other than artricle marketing.

By the way page rank is a system for ranking web pages/sites/blogs/pdf files according to link popularity and text-matching. The higher your page rank the better your chances you will be listed on the first page of your chosen keywords.

I never submitted my marketing website to any search engine…they actually found it thru article marketing. However if you want to submit anyway just follow the instruction provided on the next paragraph.

Submitting to the search engines yourself

OK…as you know by now I hate submission services. The only submissions you should do can be done yourself. And in my opinion you should only submit to the top three search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN.

GOOGLE Traffic - Everyone knows or should know that the top search engine is Google. Did you know that once you have your website published or online google will eventually crawl it. This is done by way of your webhosting company. All webhosting websites are already indexed by google and if you have your website uploaded on their server Google will eventually find it and index it. However the best way to get your site notice is to submit it yourself. Add your website (http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl) it’s is free. Remember it will take sometime before your website will appear for the “keywords” that you have on your content.

Yahoo Traffic - The next Search Engine is Yahoo they are somewhat harder to get listed but there is a way to do it free. It will take longer than google but again it is free. They also have a paid service which will guaranteed inclusion within 2-3 weeks, but the cost is around 300.00 bucks (I wouldn’t Pay)! Please make sure to use the Suggesting a Site to the Directory link. Here is the link to submit free: (http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/directory/)

MSN Traffic - Now the thrid Search Engine is MSN. If you have good content on your website it should get indexed in about 3-4 weeks. By the way MSN and Live.com are one and the same. Here is the link (http://search.msn.com.sg/docs/submit.aspx?FORM=WSDD)

Do a little SEO yourself. Put your keywords in your page heading meta tags.

(meta http-equiv=”Content-Type” content=”text/html; charset=UTF-8″ /)

(title>Your title (/title)

(meta name=”Description” content=”description of your website”)

(meta name=”KeyWords” content=”your keywords shouldn’t be more than eight”)

(h1)Your heading(/h1)

The heading should be what your web page is about. Also sprinkle some of the same keywords (a little seo yourself) on your text. And more importanly use a variation of those same keywords (e.g. “Self SEO”, How to do your own SEO” etc…)

Example: (h1)A little SEO yourself(/h1)

Put your keywords into the description tag:

Example: (meta name=”Description” content=”How to do SEO yourself”)

Remember the description tag is what will be displayed on the search engines. So you will want something that will make the searcher click on your link.

ADD your keywords in on your alt tags but not all of them.

If you’ve got graphics on your page, considering writing a natural piece of unique, keyword rich text to apply to the alternative text (alt tag) on your image. Example: (img src=”yourimage.jpg border=”0″ alt=”a little seo yourself”)

Put your keywords into the page name Example: www.yourwebsite.com/do-seo-yourself.htm Just don’t over do it. Stay away from do-it-your-self-search-engine-optimizaion.htm

Got questions? You can always email me by visiting my bio resource page.

Instincts and Traits in Dogs

Domestication of canines was accomplished by humans thousands of years ago. Many think that the world’s first dogs were tamed wolves, as dogs share many biological traits with wolves. First of all they look very much alike and their actions are similar. They both have highly developed sense of smell and hearing.

Dogs are extremely loyal and dependent on their masters. They have a place in human society to which few other species can hold a candle. The only reward for dogs in many cases is a kind word and a pat on the head. Still, the study of wolves and dogs teaches us that many of their traits haven’t changed from before they were domesticated.

* Body Language is a postural display by canines that show you their intentions. When meeting a strange person, canines display their fear by raising their hackles, meaning, the hair stands up on their backs and necks. This display comes from lack of socialization with others. Of course this behavior would look more frightening with short-haired dogs, making them look larger and making the other dog or person fear him more. Many times a dog will also pull back his lips to show his teeth to make the display even more “large”.

* A dogs ears and tail positions can tell you what a dog is thinking. For example, if your dog’s ears go back flat and his tail goes between his legs, it means he is being submissive to humans or other dogs. The old saying “ran off with his tail between his legs” came from this postural display of dogs. Another submissive behavior is rolling over on the back.

* If a dog kneels or puts his front legs on the ground lowering his front quarters, it generally means he wants to play. This is always accompanied by a friendly wagging tail.

* Standing tall on stiff legs and circling another dog is a posture of superiority and domination. It often includes strutting around with frequent growling and snarling.

* An instinctive ritual in canines is circling before lying down. Some specialists say that this came from a habit long ago of circling to pack down the grass to give a soft bed to sleep in. Others think the dog is smelling the area for enemies before lying down, as they put their noses to the ground while they are performing this task.

* Attacking small animals is an innate hunting instinct in dogs from the time when they had to hunt for their food.

* Digging is a trait that is thought to come from the dog’s instinct to dig a den when there is nothing else appropriate to make a den with. Terriers were known to pursue their quarry through underground tunnels if necessary.

Other things to consider is the dogs sense of smell developed so they can sniff the air to find game and also to sniff out enemies that may be approaching. They have a wonderful sense of hearing for the same reasons and their sight is highly developed.

Although canines’ instincts and actions are influenced by their heredity, they are highly intelligent mammals, and are the products of a combination of training, experience and genetics.

Business Motivation for the Entrepreneur: What Drives You to Succeed and Build Wealth in Your Life?

Motivation as an entrepreneur can mean many things to different people and changes dramatically from case to case. Everyone has a driving force or something they’re trying to get to or get more of. For some, it’s more money, time, or to travel. For others, it can be power, freedom, or love. Often times, it’s a combination of things, but what’s most important is that you come to realize what it is that you most want in life and remind yourself of that thing constantly. Eat, sleep, and breathe that idea of what you’ll achieve once you reach that end goal and don’t ever forget it. If you want that brand new car or vehicle, print out a picture of it and put it in places you’ll see all day every day. Put them up in the bathroom and next to your computer monitor or on the fridge. Glance at them as much as possible and really visualize yourself achieving that goal and feeling how you will once you attain it.

If money is your primary motivation, there must be something underlying that you actually wish to use with it. The idea of having money alone isn’t enough to really zero-in on what it is that you want. Take the time to reflect on what you would do if money wasn’t even an issue and you always had a constant stream of it coming in that was enough to live extremely comfortably. Is there a material possession that you’ve always wanted like a car, boat, or house? If so, make sure you take those pictures I spoke of earlier and plaster them all over the place. Imagine yourself at the wheel or living in that luxurious home and really concentrate on the sights, sounds, and smells that would come along with having them. If it’s freedom, then think of how nice it would be to work hard for no one but you and how everything you do will directly affect your bottom dollar and not someone else. All of your success will come from you and you only, so feel how much of an accomplishment that will be. If travel is your motivator, lookup information about all the beautiful destinations of the world that you’ll soon be visiting. The options are endless really, so aim big and don’t ever look back.

Let me share what drives me so you can gain an understanding of who I am as a person. My motivators are to achieve great financial wealth so that I don’t ever have to worry about how I’m going to pay bills each and every month or to be so in debt that I’m constantly stressed out and doing who knows what harm to my mind and body. Along with this comes the feeling of being fully on my own and not having to answer to anyone for anything. I’ve been under the scrutiny of so many managers and bosses over the years that never seemed to really understand the motivations behind working life and how employees should be treated and dealt with. I don’t ever want to experience that again. Nor do I wish to sit in traffic for hours each day as I smell exhaust fumes and watch as impatient drivers cut each other off and express their road rage. I will always work hard, but on my own terms and for me - that’s it.

It will be different for everyone, but you have to keep those motivations near and dear to your heart and never ever let them go. Believe that you’ve already gotten them and act accordingly and before you know it, they’ll become a reality.

If you’d like to find out more information on how you can accomplish that end goal of whatever truly motivates you, please visit my site at http://www.how2livethedream.com.

Your first step is simply making that first step toward financial independence…don’t wait, do it now!

Does Diindolylmethane From Broccoli Help With Estrogen Balance?

Diindolylmethane from broccoli can help with estrogen balance: There is plenty of evidence to suggest that, but before discussing the whys and wherefores, let’s first have a look at the substance, where it comes from and why it should have any effect on estrogen or its balance.

Diindolylmethane is an indole contained in brassicas such as broccoli, cabbage, kale, brussel sprouts and cauliflower. It is a dimer of indole-3-carbinol, which is itself formed by the autolytic degradation of glucosinolate glucobrassicin which is found in brassicas. Both this and the dimeric diindolylmethane are currently being tested for their antioxidant, anticancer and antiatherogenic properties, although this type of research has been mainly made on animals. When the cell walls of brassicas are ruptured, the enzyme myrosinase is released, that breaks down the glucobrassicin.

Because diindolylmethane is oil soluble it is more bioavailable to the body in the presence of vitamin E and other lipophilic substances, and these are normally included in oral supplements. However, back to estrogen and its effects upon human estrogen balance. Estrogen is the name for a group of steroids that function substantially as the female sex hormone. They have many effects on the body, including regulation of the menstrual cycle, breast development and promote the formation of secondary female characteristics such as reduced height and muscle mass.

Estrogen is also present in the male, where it regulates several factors pertaining to the reproductive system. It does not, however, take part in the process that determines sexual desire. If all of these properties are considered it would seem logical to believe that estrogen levels could be used to control weight increase, although claims that it can be use to enhance sexual performance seem ill founded: based more on hope than on science!

What science appears to have found, however, is that estrogen dominance, due to an imbalance between estrogen and progesterone levels in the body, can give rise to increased weight, and even obesity, in women. It can also lead to uterine, ovarian and breast cancers, and cervical dysplasia which, while not cancer, can give rise to cervical cancer if not treated. Estrogen imbalance, therefore, is not good news and something to be avoided if it possibly can. So what can be done to avoid it?

The answer is to find a hormonal balance, and this is where diindolylmethane (DIM) comes in. The substance has been found to have a positive effect on the balance between estrogen and progesterone, although eating broccoli will not be sufficient to do the job properly. Insufficient DIM is released by breaking the cell walls of broccoli through chewing to have much effect on the balance, about a kilo of broccoli a day being needed to have any noticeable effect. It is the diindolylmethane supplements that are able to have the desired effect in restoring the hormone balance and eliminating the undesirable effects of estrogen imbalance.

But why should estrogen imbalance occur? What are the factors that cause this dangerous condition, and if it is so common how did our ancestors manage without today’s science? The answer to the second question lies in that to the first, but before we discuss that don’t go thinking that your ancestors managed through thick and thin. Perhaps yours did, but your life expectancy is significantly greater than that of your parents when they were born. In fact, you don’t have to go too far up your family tree to when you would be doing well if you hit forty! So the argument about your ancestors doesn’t wash.

In fact, an estrogen imbalance can be caused by several factors: a slow estrogen metabolism that leads to an excess of estrogen because it is not broken down quickly enough is common, but far more common is the effect of pollutants such as pesticides, car exhaust fumes, emulsifiers, household cleaners and even some soaps. They contain chemicals known as xenoestrogens that our body believes to be real estrogens. They can stick to estrogen receptors on healthy cells, and can also prevent true estrogen from binding to the cell it should bind to. This results in an increase in free estrogen that cannot bind to the estrogen receptors that it should. Your ancestors did not have these problems with such ‘estrogen mimics’ and so managed just fine.

There is also the fact that estrogen can be broken down in the liver by means of two different routes: one leads to a form of estrogen that metabolizes to provide many benefits, such as strong bones and a reduction in heart disease, while the other has the opposite effect of causing cancers, depression, osteoporosis and problems with your immune system. That is by no means the full list: you don’t want to see that, believe me!

You might think that if estrogen is dominant over progesterone, then taking progesterone would resolve the problem. It would seem to be a good cure. In fact, it is not a good idea since progesterone can be metabolized into yet more estrogen, making the problem even worse. The real answer is to take a supplement containing the substance that solves the problem by changing the estrogen metabolism pathways in the liver: diindolylmethane. More of the so-called “good” estrogen metabolites are formed, and less of the bad. The actual estrogen levels are not changed, but the way in which the excess estrogen causes harm is changed. That way, it doesn’t matter what the imbalance is, the estrogen cannot do ham to your body.

DIM possesses many potential positive benefits when used as a supplement. It can reduce your chances of getting breast, cervical and ovarian cancers, and also acts as a strong antioxidant, and helps to strengthen your immune system. It might help you to lose weight, but more studies are needed before this can be claimed conclusively. However, there is evidence at the moment that it has a weight reducing effect.

Its effect on sexual health is largely unfounded, but the effect of a placebo in this area can be astounding: that indicates how much psychology has to do with sexual performance. Nevertheless, the known and projected benefits of diindolylmethane are so significant that taking a supplement would seem a reasonable thing to do, and although your mom was right about you eating your broccoli, brassicas alone are not a rich enough source for a significant effect.

Be Safe When You Date

On line dating is a dating service based on the internet, because it is based on the internet it can reach out to every corner of the globe and so is much further reaching and with many more subscribers than a conventional dating service. Even so it would be unreasonable to expect to meet Miss or Mr Right on your first online date.

The internet makes the search for love more convenient, it can save time and money.

Online dating was once thought to be (by many) unacceptable. You must (as with any unknown) be ever vigilant of your safety. If you feel in the slightest bit uncomfortable then cease communications with the person concerned. You will have the facility of blocking a person you feel uncomfortable with.

You will be required to complete an online dating profile, be as truthful as possible in this if you are hoping to find a life long partner; any discrepancies may be difficult to explain later.

If you are single and looking for love or friendship why not try one of the many online dating services. You can easily see who has checked out your profile and who there is that matches your criteria.

There is not the stigma attached to online dating today as there was years ago and most people are genuinely looking for love from the choice of millions of potential partners. You do not have to meet anyone unless you want to and you should not disclose any personal details for example your phone number, address or email address until you are 100% comfortable in doing so. If you have waited a lifetime to meet Mr or Miss Right a little while longer waiting until you feel secure won’t hurt.

Love is the main reason people turn to online dating. Before you begin online dating ask yourself are you looking for love and commitment or is it friendship that you want. If you only want friendship and whoever you are chatting to clearly wants more then simply more on to another online date.

Likewise if you are looking for love and the person you are chatting to clearly does not want commitment then this is not for you and there are plenty of other potential partners to try.

Get to know someone and see if you enjoy spending time with them. Are they fun to communicate with? Do you feel you can trust your online date?

The bigger sites have more features and some will screen their clients .But while the bigger sites may have webcams etc they are really only aimed at dating people in general. Always remember that you can have as much privacy as you want, you are in control.

If someone is not very forthcoming give them a chance, they may be painfully shy and who knows once you manage to make them feel confident they may be just what you were looking for, so please do have a little patience and don’t dismiss anyone too easily but if it makes you feel uncomfortable then more on to someone else.

May you find whatever you are looking for and enjoy what you have.

How to Teach a Dog to Stop Barking

Hearing a dog happily barking as it chases after a ball in the woods can be a wonderful sound, but if the neighbors are complaining and you and your family are suffering from having a dog that barks constantly that you cannot control, you will probably want to learn how to teach a dog to stop barking.

The first thing to consider is why the dog is barking so much. A normal puppy or young adult dog is like a baby in that it will bark when it wants attention or has a need, for example if it is hungry or thirsty, wants to poop or needs exercise. With most dogs, if you figure out what they want, you can supply it and that is the end of the problem.

But some dogs bark a lot more than this. This is most likely if they are either kept in the house alone all day when you are at work, or if they are not getting enough exercise.

In the case of exercise, maybe you are not able to walk a big dog as often or for as long as it needs it. You could be sick or not have time, or in some climates it may be difficult to get out a lot in winter.

Letting the dog in the backyard will probably not be enough. It knows the backyard too well and there are not enough new and interesting sights and scents to keep it occupied. Instead, consider hiring a dog walking service.

Some dogs will bark whenever they see or sense someone approaching. This is what is known as ‘reactive barking’: barking as a reaction to events.

If a dog barks reactively, it is often because the dog has learnt to act as a guard dog in the past. If you have an adult dog it could have been trained to do this from a puppy by a previous owner. Perhaps it used to live in an isolated area and was rewarded for barking whenever there was a noise outside. If you live in a city, this will mean a lot of barking!

If the dog is used to being rewarded for barking and has been specially trained to do it, it will not understand that you do not welcome the noise. In this situation you may have to consider finding another home for the dog - or moving out of town yourself!

Another possibility is that as a puppy it learned this behavior from adult dogs and has simply never been taught not to bark. In this situation you may have more success. You can train it to be quiet in the same way you would train it to do anything else: use the command ‘Quiet!’ and always reward for obedience.

Remembering to reward the dog for being quiet is difficult because it is a non-behavior: instead of doing something that demands your attention and a reward, like fetching back a ball, it is not doing something. It is easy for you to give a sigh of relief at the sudden silence and move on. But it is vital to remember the reward; otherwise the training will never be successful.

If the dog is alone in the house all day while you work, it is not surprising that it gets bored. Dogs love company and leaving a dog alone for 10 hours a day, as many people do, are sure to have an effect. If it wasn’t barking it would probably be either tearing the furniture apart or becoming seriously depressed. So what can you do to stop your lonely barking dog from driving the neighbours crazy?

First, the dog walking service is something that you might want to consider in this situation too. You will need to find a service that you trust enough to give them a key to the house. Then they can come when you are not home, pick up the dog and take it walking. This will break up the dog’s day and make it much more accepting of the times that it is left alone. You want to make sure that the service will walk the dog as close to the middle of the day as possible.

Other things that you can do to keep the dog calm while you are working:

• Close the drapes or shades. The best is to have shades or shutters that the dog cannot get behind. This will keep their focus indoors, so they do not look out the window barking at everything that moves outside. But this will increase boredom so it is not enough by itself.

• Get another pet, either a cat or another dog. Even an aquarium can help to keep the dog interested.

• If you leave the television on low then your dog will have the moving pictures to break up the monotony.

A dog that barks at every little thing that happens, even when you are home, may have a problem - for example if it barks every time that you stand up or sit down. This is abnormal behavior and could be due to a difficult early life (especially if it is a rescue dog) or some physical condition or illness. You should see a veterinarian in this case, because you probably will not be able to teach the dog to stop barking by yourself.

Living With Arthritis

Arthritis is an inflammation of the joint and for those who live with arthritis it can be a painful, frustrating and debilitating disease. So much so, in fact, that back in the days of the Roman empire, citizens with severe arthritis were exempt foromm paying taxes during the time of Emperor Diocletian. Unfortunately today’s government does not afford such privileges to arthritis sufferers but there are a few things you can do to help to manage it.

According to The National Arthritis Data Workgroup of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases one in seven people in the United States has arthritis and that number is expecting to increase to 60 million people who have it by the year 2020 as the baby boomer population ages. And while not all forms of arthritis are the same or have the same degree of severity, it is important for those who do have it to understand it and how to cope with it.

The word Arthritis comes from the Greek words “artho”, meaning joint, and “itis”, meaning inflammation. It usually affects people who are fifty-five years of age or old but can affect those younger as well. Although there are many different types of arthritis the most common form is known as osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease which could be the result of infection of the joint, age, or trauma to the joint.

With a normal joint cartilage, which is at the end of each bone were it meets another bone, protects the joint and provides smooth movement. Pain in the joint is caused when this cartilage starts to break down and in extreme cases this can lead to the bare bones in the joint touching and rubbing together. In these cases the joint starts to lose its shape and spurs are formed by the thickening the the bone ends.

The most common treatment of arthritis is to take some form of anti-inflammatory drug which helps to keep the inflammation down had also has some painkilling effect as well. The most common of these being drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, and ketoprofen. As always though, before taking any medication for relief of arthritis pain it is a good idea to speak with your doctor who can prescribe the best treatment for your needs.

Drugs are not the only treatment for arthritis and exercise and diet has been shown to have benefit in the treatment of arthritis. Exercise has been shown to not only reduce the inflammatory associated with arthritis but it can also have the potential of slow the progression of the disease. Keeping active can help maintain or improve the mobility with the joint not to mention the added benefit of keeping yourself in generally good health overall. Again however, it is advised that before starting any exercise program speak with your doctor to help determine your level of fitness and design an exercise routine that suites you and your arthritis.

Living with arthritis does not have to be debilitating experience with no end in sight. In most cases it is manageable with a little effort, knowledge and guidance from your health care professional.

Tranquility in Your Garden With a Garden Fountain

It is well known that running water can help you to relax. A garden fountain can help to add beauty to your backyard and provide a centerpiece to your gardening and landscaping. It will also enhance the peace and tranquility in your garden.

Choosing a fountain isn’t always easy. There is a wide range of fountains available, from inexpensive molded plastic fountains to expensive carved stone garden fountains. With such a wide range, it can be difficult to find one to fit your garden and your budget. You’ll want to choose a fountain that enhances your garden and backyard, and will last for many years.

The low-end molded plastic fountains simply will not last for a long time. Plastic fountains are difficult to clean when dirty, and they will crack over time. They are inexpensive options for a garden fountains, but you will find yourself replacing a cheap plastic fountain every few years when they break. A plastic fountain won’t give you a long lasting centerpiece to your garden.

The more expensive carved stone fountains will last a long time, and make a stunning centerpiece to your yard. However, they are expensive, and may not fit your budget. Some also need a lot of maintainence, and they are heavy and hard to move.

A good choice for a garden fountain would be a mid-range fountain. These fountains are often made of poly resin, or a stone and resin mix. They are affordable, and will stand up to the weather very well. These fountains are also much lighter, and easier to handle than stone, while retaining the look and feel of stone.

Be sure to choose a water feature that fits your environment. If you live in a climate with drastic changes in the weather from season to season, you’ll want a fountain that can withstand the weather, or that you can store easily in the winter. Stone fountains are not easy to move, due to their weight, and the changes in weather may cause them to crack.

When you choose your fountain, you’ll also want to consider the pump and the water capacity. Low-end fountains may not hold very much water, or pump very much water. The more expensive fountains will have a stronger pump which can move more water, which will look much better. A fountain that pumps 5 gallons per minute should be sufficient to provide an appealing stream of water. A weaker pump will not pump enough water to provide a visually appealing fountain.

You need to consider where you are going to place your fountain. You’ll need electricity to run the pump, so it should be close enough to an electrical outlet. Fountains equipped with a standard 120v connection can simply be plugged into a standard outlet. Your fountain should also be close enough to a water supply, so you can top it off easily as the water evaporates.

Another consideration as far as location, is the visual impact of the fountain. Do you want to see it from your patio, or do you want it tucked into a remote corner. Sometimes placing a fountain at the end of a garden path, tucked into a remote corner of the garden will help to add to the relaxing effect of the fountain. You may also want to consider placing several small fountains throughout the garden, to provide accents here and there.

The proper fountain, properly placed will help to enhance the tranquility of your backyard, as well as adding a nice visual accent to your garden.
